Drop Arms are used for holding light fixtures or other equipment in varying heights from the ceiling.
By turning the adjusting knob in the counter clockwise direction, one can release the arm and adjust the length of the Drop Arm as desired.
Afterwards, the length is fixed by turning the knob in the opposite direction.
